Well, i've now done most of the tweaks at from the page HappyAndyK posted (
WinVistaClub : Make Vista Start, Run, Shutdown Faster !) and all i can say is WOW. What a difference it has made. It boots, shutdown and runs heaps faster now. I'm now a happy camper.
