Hi nmc,
lets try and reinstall the Windows Update Agent.
Download the setup file
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 to a folder and run it by right clicking on the setup file and select Run As Administrator.
Try the updates again and post another log session and also see if there is anything in the Cbs.log file,
