this seems to be a common problem allright.
My thoughts are, and you've probably read them, is to use something like Robocopy from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools available here...

Apparently if you type xcopy /? it will tell you something similiar ( cant test, not near any Vista PC's )
