You are welcome to run whatever operating system you prefer. I
certainly don't want to try to persuade you otherwise. Nevertheless,
your list of what's needed to run Vista without a problem is far from
correct.
1) you have compatible hardware
Of course! You can't run anything if you don't have compatible
hardware for it.

I run a pretty extensive amount of software. It's mostly all the same
software I ran under XP, and it all runs just fine under Vista. The
only exceptions were a couple of minor utilities that wouldn't work at
all, but I can easily live without those.

I do *not* use it in a "very limited conservative fashion."

I image the entire drive regularly. That's good practice regardless of
what operating system you run.
However I have *never* needed to use any of the images I create,
because nothing has ever gotten screwed up.
