Re: cannot download ANYTHING
here are various things you can try:

1) Go Start>all programs>accessories> system tools>
and run INTERNET EXPLORER (No -add ons)
see if IE functions with downloads in this case

2) To Disable add-ins (that includes active x controls)
run IE and go to TOOLS> Internet Options>
Programs (tab)> press the MANAGE ADD ONS button
select all that you dont need and then DISABLE them
via the radio button (the thing with the dot on the bottom)

3) To manually uninstall active x (I dont think you should do this if you
are new to this stuff) go to
c:\windows\downloaded program files
and remove the active x stuff from there

4) Install firefox www.getfirefox.com

5) Use a download manager like:
www.freedownloadmanager.org
