I saw infrequent but troublesome explorer (windows explorer) crashes in
several of the Beta builds, but have not seen it much in the last 3 builds
including RTM.

I wish I had an alternative solution. Make sure that

1) You try to use Startup Repair again from that Recovery link accessed via
the DVD
2) Try system restore from the recovery link as well since sometimes that
will work if there is a restore point to before this happened, but from what
you wrote I suspect it was always happening.
