Had the same trouble - didn't uninstall messenger, just updated to the
latest version of live messenger to fix, as per: 'This Post'
(http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...3-5fa4cd76e872).
Everything fine now.
Just posting as a heads-up to anyone else who has this problem.
