Hi,
Actually this whole incident makes me very leery about applying any future
updates.

Well, so, maybe if I reapply the updates with IEWatch not installed???
Actually IE Watch has never given me any trouble in the past. And it's
about the only way to see the HTTP headers, and HTTPS headers in clear text.

Problem, I'm not a home user. I'm SOHO. And this is an MSDN version
windows.

Going by the list I provided, I have no idea which of those updates maybe
have triggered the problem. It could have been one of the OS updates that
somehow relates to IE.
Some more information:
It usually hangs with this in the status line:
Opening page
http://view.atdmt.com/mrt/iview.mscm...rect/01?click=...
Now that I think on it, isn't it a little strange that it's trying to load
something from a third party site?
Also, you cross posted to public.windowsupdate.
I took a peek over there and another post there caught my eye. It mentioned
HijackThis so just for grins I tried that. Then to my surprise a couple
spurious registry entries turned up. There was one for a browser helper
that I had no knowledge of. Nothing on disk so the entry was going no where
(File missing). I guess something tried to install it's self but my AV
prevented it from succeeding.
Anyway, I cleaned that up but the issue still persists.
Since there doesn't seem to be any way of reinstalling IE by it's self,
would an inplace reinstall of the OS work? I've seen that recommended for
XP.
Needless to say, I'm not very thrilled about a fresh install and having to
then reinstalling the various versions of Visual Studio and Office and
Visio, and everything else. Not to mention the lost work time.
