Gosh fella I know you are offering help but I thought this was a vista
forum. All the XP stuff tosses me into a state of dyslexia.
I have no doubt you can help me I hope you stick with me.

A. I only run Vista and only it's firewall and defender. No 3rd party
anything. I do connect through a router hub a Trendnet Ndraft. No
special settings there.

B. I cannot find any of the settings you describe. I have only one
workgroup and each computer has the same login name but different
passwords. I cannot find this tab "This
is done from the System applet in Control Panel, Computer Name tab."
Are you talking XP here?

What about me not being able to change my Read only status of the files
and whay can I xfr from one pc to the other but not vise versa? and when
it tells me I need permission where do I go to give it?
