Hummm.....that was it. I plugged the phone back in, went to device manager,
portable devices, and disabled windows mobile-based device. thanks so much
for the help.

But with the device disabled, I won't be able to access it via the Mobile
Device center. I just tested and it just says "connecting" ooops just
errored. How can I get both to work??? I guess it's not that big a deal as i
don't use hyperterminal enough but still an oddity.
