Sorry to hear about your lost data.

I don't believe that someone can simply connect to your PC, gain
administrator access, and then transfer and/or delete data. I've heard
of situations where a trojan had infected a computer and gained access,
but simply sitting on a public network (absent of some type of exploit)
shouldn't automatically grant access to your system.
