I had the problem of not being able to get XP spk3 to finish installing.
I read several boards & found no solution that really helped. My
problems all started after the RAM in my computer failed. Before I
realized it (the RAM) was failing I had tried to reinstall windows even
a clean (format drive) install.
I started out downloading some updates from WU. It finally got to the
point of asking me to install spk3. Failed, failed, failed. I could
not get it to install even in safe mode.
After seeing my log file I figured out that it was trying to restart
the .net 1.0...service after the install & would fail, this caused the
install to fail & revert back to previous settings. Doing a little more
research & trying to install .net 1.0 spk3 (note this is not xp spk3
just .net1.0 spk3) to no avail I finally downloaded the windows cleanup
utility & uninstalled .net 1.0...went back to windows update (after
rebooting) & finally got .net 1.0 spk 3 to install. I should also note
that before attempting to install xp spk3 after this solution I decided
to just finish out all the other updates that were available for my
computer. This included .net 3.0 In an attempt to get it right this
time I downloaded the spk3 ISO & made a cd, even went as far as
uninstalling my anti virus software (disabling internet access at this
point until finished & reinstalled). Finally after all is said & done I
now have xp sp3 installed. I hope this helps anyone who might be having
similar problems.

p.s. If this seems like a jumbled mess of a solution I apologize...it
took me several working days to get to this solution & those working
days were over the course of about 2 weeks, I tried to include as much
as I could remember & in the order in which it took place.
