Sounds as if you have NumLock on - hitting the Del key with numlock on
generates a period instead of a Del command.

This morning when I was checking my e-mail my gray delete key could
not/would not function as it had a last night. Instead of deleting the
highlighted mail message, it just beeps. I can still delete from the
context menu. The weirdest thing! It worked last night when I went to bed,
and the machine was not turned off. Weird!
